Ask the Experts: Moisturizing Acne-Prone Skin

Posted by Mariel Rittenhouse Goodson

Q: Are people with acne supposed to use a moisturizer? I have always used an oil-free moisturizer but my new dermatologist recently told me that no one with acne should be using moisturizer, ever. She said that my skin was producing enough hydration via the massive oil slick on my face. I also just went off Accutane so I'm confused about what I should be doing for my skin. -AZ in New Orleans, LA

A: There are many different skin types that are prone to acne, including dry, combination and oily, and many of my acne patients do require a moisturizer since they are dried-out from using medications like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. That being said, it's also possible that someone who is extremely oily all of the time may not require moisturization or only minimal moisturization. You may do well using a gel or serum formula (in lieu of a heavy cream) in order to deliver light hydration in tandem with anti-aging ingredients like peptides and antioxidants.

It should be noted that over-drying skin by starving your complexion of moisture can also worsen breakouts. My advice is to use your judgment as to what feels "right" on your skin. And rest assured, the vast majority of skincare products are formulated with cosmetic-grade ingredients that may feel rich, but are unlikely to actually worsen breakouts.

  • Rub olive oil on your face, then place a washcloth (as hot as you can stand it) on your face. Then rinse and wipe the olive oil off. Very soothing and actually helped keep me from breaking out.
