When I was little, one of my favorite babysitters hailed from the UK. She had a sweet, nurturing way about her and she loved regaling us with stories from her homeland. Our dear Claire was never more effusive than during the holidays and while I don’t recall everything she told us about how she celebrated over in England, we did adopt one of her traditions almost immediately. Thanks to Claire, my mom began leaving our stockings at the foot of our beds on Christmas morning rather than strung up from the mantle.

She’d stuff each stocking with little wrapped treats, an orange, an apple and tons of candy, and that would buy her and my father an extra half hour of sleep while we ravaged the stash before waking them up for the big show downstairs. It’s a tradition she continues to this day – even though I’m in my thirties – and it’s one I’ll certainly carry forward with my own children.

I’m not sure if this is an entirely authentic or exclusively British practice, but it instilled in me a deep abiding affection for stocking stuffers. As such, I’ve put together a list of “amuse bouche” gifts that’ll make the holidays even sweeter….for you and your crew.
