H.D.I.Y. (Hair D.I.Y.): Red Carpet Hair Tie

Posted by Rory Evans

My idea of an endurance event is trying to wear my hair down. I’ve gone as long as one hour, 47 minutes, and 13 seconds before breaking down and putting it up in a ponytail. Which is why I feel naked—and a little panicky—if my wrist doesn’t have a hair elastic around it. Realizing this is not a sophisticated look, I recently splurged $15 on a five-pack of Emi-Jay holders (according to their website, Jennifer Aniston, SJP, Gwyneth Paltrow, etc. etc. are fans).

But then I promptly lost three of them. Rather than buying more, I ordered 15 yards of fold-over elastic (for about $10), and set about making dozens and dozens for myself, my friends, and my coworkers.

As you’ll see in the video, it couldn’t be easier: Each one takes a little more than 30 seconds, including applying Fray Check glue to the raw ends. The only problem is, it looks so cute in my ponytail that my resolve to wear my hair down has further eroded.

You'll need scissors, Dritz Fray Check, fold-over elastic, ruler. (To make one hair tie, cut a piece between 10 and 11 inches long.)

And here's the finished product at work!

Are there any other easy ponytail/updo supplies (or upgrades) you swear by?

  • Love your technique! Sure beats buying them.. I'm always loosing elastics.

where can I buy this fold over elastic? will Michaels or Joanne Fabrics carry it?

    Thanks!

Hi there! Thanks for posting. I actually ordered the foldover elastic from elasticbytheyard.com. They have tons of colors to choose from. Have fun--your ponytail will thank you. (You can wear one with these hair bands for hours and then take it out, and not have that crease/bump in your hair.) --Rory

  • These look great…lots of companies making them…any idea who was the first one to actually create these?

I'm not sure who made them first, but the first ones I became aware of a few years ago (after seeing Jennifer Aniston on the red carpet) were the Emi-Jay ones. Thanks for commenting!--Rory

  • I'd love to make some of these hair ties and I've got everything I need in my amazon cart, right now! But I do have one question about the materials; does the elastic that you use have a width of 1"? I assume it folds over itself slightly. My only hesitation in purchasing the one-inch is that when I see these hair ties they appear to be much thinner.
    Thanks!!

  • Hi, I'd like very much to view the tutorial, but the link seems to be removed from the site? I have all the supplies, but want guidance from someone who has already made these so I don't have to waste much material with my first tries. Can you repost it, or send a link, please? Thank you so much!
